Capturing Easter Festivities With mailVU

Once the religious observances are done, the meal is prepared, the Easter clothes are off and put away, it will be time to color and design eggs to be strategically hidden.

At least, that’s how I always remembered it. Never a big fan of eggs (unless they were the colorful plastic ones filled with foil-wrapped chocolates) I always gave mine away; the hunt was the best part. I have a few faded pictures from those days, nothing like what’s available today with the prevalence of video recorders on tablets and smartphones.

Fortunately, mailVU is here for those who may have far-off relatives and friends this holiday! Recording video mail is even easier this year now that we have apps! Check out mailVU for iPhone and mailVU for Android; just click, record and send right from your phone, iPad or Android tablet. mailVU’s videos are viewable on most tablets, smartphones and computers, so your recipients will always have access.

This year, you can get video of the kids in their new Easter finery – before it gets dirty, record them running around the house and yard during the big hunt and shoot the Peeps after dinner puppet show ‘Peepsterpiece Theater.’ Yeah, I just thought up that last one. You’re welcome.

Sending video email is fast and easy with mailVU and your recipients will love receiving your video messages so much more than a picture! Try it out at mailVU.com and use it for all your springtime special moments.

Happy Easter and Happy Recording!

A Brief Guide To Video Email Cold Calls

Cold Call Video Email

In-person meetings are always the best way to introduce yourself to a new prospect, but getting that first appointment through a cold call can be a challenge. mailVU’s video email service is being used more frequently as a means of introducing oneself in video to a prospect. Our high deliverability rate, and video email open rates 2-3x that of text email make video mail a great way to cold call. Plus you can be notified when the prospect views the video, and how many times they watch it. This allows you to follow up with them when your video is fresh in their mind!

Good video cold call emails can help land an appointment, but only if you make a positive first impression. Here are four tips for creating a standout video introduction:

Use the prospect’s name. Start your video mails with “Hello prospect name”. This will immediately get their attention (everyone likes hearing their own name) and lets them know the video mail is not a mass distribution. You can even hold up a piece of paper at the start of their video with their name on it. As long as you hold it up during the first 2 seconds of the recording it will be displayed in the thumbnail image in the email. Who wouldn’t be tempted to play a video when their name is being held up? Thanks to social media sites such as LinkedIn you can find a prospect’s name in minutes.

Be concise. Try not to sell on your initial video mail. Be concise with introducing yourself and your product, and let the recipient know why you are contacting them and the value you can add. Remember, there has to be value for the prospect or they will never accept your call. Keep your video introduction short – 30 seconds is ideal. If you think you’re rambling, you are. Remember you are only trying to get an appointment where you can talk in more detail. The video mail is only to peak their interest enough to meet, or have a call with you.

Tailor your video message. Your video mail should not be a one-size-fits-all pitch. Target your video message to the specific prospect, and associate your solution to their needs. If you know their industry and the typical problem experienced in that industry, clearly state that your products addresses those problems and you would like an opportunity to discuss it further.

Balance enthusiasm with being “real”. No one will like a cheesy, aggressive and superficial salesperson over video email. Be enthusiastic and friendly, but don’t sell on your initial message. Show that you are a real person with whom they should want to meet. Before you go on and on about how great your product is, take a step back and make sure you’re exuding friendliness and confidence, and not sounding too salesy. After recording your video message, play it back before sending the video via email. Re-record as often as you like and then send the video mail when you are completely satisfied.

mailVU makes it easy to record and send cold call video email to prospects. You can record from mailVU.com, mailVU’s free video email app on iPhones, or mailVU’s free video email app on Android phones. If you want to add your company branding on the video emails take a look at mailVU’s Business Plan. Along with branding you can upload pre-recorded videos, utilize a video testimonial recording widget on your website, embed videos on your site, and many other useful features.

Have questions? Send them via video mail from our Contact Us Page. Good luck in your cold call prospecting!

Tips for Recording Video Email Outdoors

We’ve written extensively about how to get the best mailVU video recordings when you’re indoors, but what about taking video outside? Well of course I’ll help you with that!

Here at mailVU headquarters, it’s getting warm out, so no one wants to be cooped up inside. Luckily, taking video out of the office is especially easy now that we offer our video messaging service with mailVU for Android and mailVU for iPhone.

Here’s a video from near our offices:

To create usable video email outdoors, check out these suggestions:

  • Record with the sunlight rather than against it – To avoid shadows make sure you put the sun in front of your subject and not behind it. If you are recording yourself with your front-facing camera, make sure the sun shines towards your face. This works on the same principle as not recording with a window behind you inside; your image will end up blacked out. Be sure that you’re standing at an angle where the sun isn’t making you squint – and by all means, don’t stare into it! If you are recording a venue, vehicle, or other object with your rear-facing camera, make sure the sun is behind you and shining on the subject being recorded.
  • Be aware of ambient noises – It’s ok to record around other people and things if it adds to the atmosphere of your video message, but make sure your recipients will be able to hear you over the din. This can be accomplished by simply taking a test video and playing it back to make sure your audio is acceptable.
  • Overcast days are okay too – Honestly, some of my better outdoor video mails have been taken on overcast days, but I could have just been lucky those times! Try it to see how your videos turn out.
  • Avoid areas where light reflects off surfaces – Videos near the water are great, but make sure you’re at an angle where you won’t get blinding light bouncing on your recordings. For example:

More video pointers for indoors or outdoors:

  • Make sure your fingers don’t cover the lens! This sounds obvious, but it can happen to all of us. Be careful to keep your fingers away from the lens on your smartphone.
  • Make sure your fingers don’t cover the microphone! This one is not so obvious as you won’t know it happened until you play back the video. Figure out where the mic on your smartphone or tablet is, and keep it uncovered and clear when you’re recording video.
  • Keep your phone/tablet steady. It’s easy to move your device when recording, which can result in a shaky video. For recording longer video mails, consider using a small tripod designed for mobile devices.
  • If recording a person speaking, be sure to stay close to them. Microphones on most smartphones are not very sensitive, so keep the phone as close to the subject you’re recording as possible. This is particularly important if the environment is noisy.
  • Don’t be too eager to move from one subject to the next. Instead, make sure you hold on your subject for at least five seconds, both when you start recording and when you end. This will allow your audience to focus in on your subject and let them give your video mails life.

With mailVU’s Business Plan, you can take video of yourself or your products outside and send them as video email, embed them on your website or blog, and create video shortlinks to send through your social media channels. Also, since it is getting nice out, why not take the time to get some outdoor video shots for your company or school’s recruitment video.

Have I left some tips off? What are your thoughts and experiences with recording video mail outdoors? Let us know!

Document Your Belongings With Video

I remember moving to my first apartment and having to get renter’s insurance. I told the agent I only needed a few thousand dollars worth of coverage. He countered with a figure three times what I’d estimated, explaining that if something were to happen, the losses would quickly add up and include things I hadn’t even thought about that would need replacing. I took his word for it. I had the coverage, but at the time I didn’t even think about taking record of my ‘valuables’ in case catastrophe struck.

If you live in a house or an apartment chances are you have lots of stuff you’re really attached to. If you run a business, you have inventory, supplies and equipment that you’ll want to protect. No one wants to think about what might happen if those things were to be damaged or worse yet, stolen. You know how easy it is to use mailVU for video email? Well it’s even easier to use our online video platform to make a video record of your belongings!

Use video to give a true look at your items – Capture serial numbers, scratches, dents, and other identifying information in case of theft. You get a better idea of what an item looks like in video than with photographs. Shooting video is also faster than shooting a bunch of pictures that can get lost – or deleted if you need room on your digital camera to take pics of your cousin’s wedding.

Be sure to keep your video records up to date – Each time you make a major purchase, record it. This might sound a little weird, but if you have the receipt, record that too so you’ll have the item’s initial value right there with the video. If you’re a business, it’s a good idea to take video inventory so you’ll have a visual and written record.

Make sure you do a thorough documentation – After you’ve done a complete walk-through inside, go outside to include additions to property that might be lost during a natural disaster. Does your business have its own vehicles? Make sure you get them on video too. If you’re an insurer, encourage policyholders to use video to take account of their belongings.

Just to demonstrate how easy it is, here’s a quick video of one of my precious valuables:

Yeah, he knows he’s cute and I took this video on my smartphone. With our apps, mailVU for iPhone and mailVU for Android, you don’t have to carry your computer around to quickly and easily record your property – not that I would ever call PeaJay property; it’s more like the other way around. Since mailVU’s videos stream from our servers, you don’t have to worry about not being able to access them. You also won’t have to worry about these videos being recorded over or having to track down a ‘well-hidden’ (you know, hidden so well you can’t find it) DVD or memory card.

Hopefully you’ll never have a situation arise where you’ll have to use these videos, but if you do need them, they’ll be there, ready for you to access and send via video mail to your insurance company in order to settle your claim as quickly as possible. For companies and organizations, your property videos can be recorded and uploaded onto your Business Plan’s dashboard where you can update them as needed.

Running Circles Around Competitors With mailVU

Meet Patton Gleason. He’s president of Natural Running Store and a mailVU Business Plan account user. He was recently featured in a terrific article on popular online socmed magazine Social Media Examiner where he spoke about how he uses social tools in his e-commerce running shoe business – a business that’s taken off in just a year’s time.

Patton also talked about mailVU and how he uses our online video platform to share information and tips with his loyal customer base. We thought that was really cool! Check out his video testimonial below where he talks more about the business of running and how mailVU provides an easy way for him to get his messages out:

This next video is an example of how Patton uses our service to easily convey handy suggestions. In this video that he sent to followers on Twitter, he demonstrates how to tie a secure knot in your running shoe. With mailVU he can just click, record and send (or, since he has our Business Plan, embed) video tips just like this one:

Thanks so much for taking time to do a video blog for us Patton! The Art of Cupcaking and Video Marketing

I’m a firm believer that everyone should know where the best cupcakeries are in the town they live in. I’m lucky that here in the Charlotte, N.C.-metro I’ve found several; SAS, Gigi’s, The Blushing, Polka Dot, and many others (there are quite a few!)

Here is gratuitous video of delicious cupcakes below. These are from Gigi’s when they first opened (I was the first in Charlotte to get their loyalty card!) Here we have banana cream pie, two wedding cakes and a red velvet.

After my latest outing to Gigi’s where I got myself a tiramisu cupcake, I thought about how video marketing and cupcakes have a lot in common. Follow me if you will…

Cupcakes, by their nature, are designed to satiate the desire for a little something sweet. They’re portable and when they’re really good, they’re individualized with different frostings and toppings. This individualization is something video marketers should think of doing when striving for exceptional customer service! Check out this article on social customer service and how one of mailVU’s Business Plan users has incorporated video into his marketing mix. When using video, you don’t have to give the recipient the whole cake – in other words, you don’t have to spend 30 minutes fawning. Just offer a small portion, a recording of a minute or less, that lets the customer know who you are and how you can best meet their needs.

Cupcakes offer a wide variety of flavors so the consumer can choose what they like. Your company has identified its marketing personas so you know what ‘flavor’ to dish out to each person you’re looking to reach. You probably wouldn’t video market to a C-level executive in the same way you would one-time customer. mailVU’s video email service makes it easy to tailor your video recordings. Simply create your message, prepare to make your video, click, record and send!

Cupcakes aren’t incredibly expensive. Around here, one of these gourmet confections I’m so fond of may be had for around $3 to $4; your run-of-the-mill grocery store cupcake is usually less than half that. Like these little frosted treats, mailVU’s online video platform is inexpensive and your company can start video marketing as soon as you’re ready. With your plan’s account, you can link your branded video emails to mailVU’s iPhone app or mailVU’s Android app and send video messages on the go!

Oh, and all you cupcake bakeries, now’s a perfect time to include video in your email marketing (see video above.) Pictures are okay when you send me emails, but go a little further! Show me (and others) video of your cupcakes right as they’re about to be frosted (the best part) or send me video of your cupcake of the day and you’ll have me (and lots of others) flocking to your stores!

How to Keep Video Email Out of Spam Folders

Are you or your recipients missing video emails? mailVU is proud of our very high deliverability rate and excellent reputation score as an email provider, however video emails can sometimes not appear in the recipient’s inbox. This could be due to a typo in the email address, or the message having landed in the email account’s Spam folder.

The first thing to do is avoid use of commonly used Spam words and characters in your Subject line. Words or symbols such as“$,” “FREE,” “Prize”, “no obligation”, and “for sale” make the email sound unsolicited. Once your Subject line is clear of Spam triggers, the instructions below will help your recipients receive mailVU video mail messages in their inboxes instead of in a Spam or junk folder:

Gmail

With Gmail, all suspected Spam is sent to the Spam folder, where it is automatically deleted after 30 days.

To tell Gmail not to send future mailVU mail to the Spam folder, put a checkmark next to the mailVU message in the Spam folder and click Not Spam.

HotMail

HotMail calls Spam “Junk.” When Junk filtering is enabled (and it is by default), all suspected Junk is sent to the Junk Email folder, where it is automatically deleted after 5 days.

To tell HotMail not to send mailVU mail to the Junk folder in the future, put a checkmark next to the mailVU video mail found in the Junk folder and click Not Junk.

If HotMail continues to identify messages from mailVU as Junk, click Options, then Junk Email Protection, then Safe List. Then type “mailVU.com” into the page and click Add.

Yahoo! Mail

In Yahoo’s email system all suspected Spam is automatically sent to the Bulk folder, where it is automatically deleted after 30 days.

To tell SpamGuard not to send mailVU video mail to the Bulk folder, put a checkmark next to the video email found in the Bulk folder and click Not Spam. You can move a mailVU message marked as Spam into the Inbox by putting a check next to the message and clicking Move > Inbox. However, users may still find future mailVU messages in the Bulk folder.

If you still aren’t seeing messages from mailVU, your email program might be SPAM blocking our messages.

AOL Mail

In the Spam Folder, check the mailVU message and click the OK Not Spam button. Email messages in this folder are automatically deleted after five days.

To ensure that none of your friends get blocked by the Spam Filter, add all of them to your Address Book or to your Buddy List. Usernames that are listed in either of those locations will never be blocked by your local spam filters.

The following details how to make sure mailVU video mail appears within some popular email management programs:

Apple Mail

Apple’s Mail application calls Spam “Junk Mail.” To tell Mail not to send mailVU video email to the Junk folder, highlight the mailVU message found in the Junk folder, and choose Message > Mark > As Not Junk Mail.

If Mail continues to identify messages from mailVU as Junk Mail, add the sender’s address to your Address Book. By default, addresses in the Address Book are not considered Junk Mail.

Microsoft Outlook

Outlook does not have built-in Spam control, but it can automatically block messages from appearing from specific addresses by adding these addresses to its “Junk Senders” list.

To unblock mailVU messages, choose Rules Wizard from the Tools menu, then click the Exception List button. Click Add, and then add your sender’s email address. Click OK to save the changes.

Microsoft Outlook Express 6

Outlook Express 6 does not have built-in Spam control, but it can automatically block messages from appearing from specific addresses. To unblock mailVU messages, choose Tools > Message Rules > Blocked Senders List.

Scroll through the list that appears and highlight any address containing the word mailVU. Click the Remove button, then OK.

Mozilla Thunderbird

Mozilla Thunderbird calls Spam “Junk Mail.” When Junk filtering is enabled, all Junk Mail is automatically sent to the Junk folder.

To tell Thunderbird to not send mailVU mail to the Junk folder in the future, highlight the mailVU message found in the Junk folder, and click the Not Junk button in the Toolbar. You can also use the keyboard shortcut of Control + J, or choose Mark, As Not Junk from the Message menu.

If Thunderbird continues to identify messages from mailVU as Junk Mail, add the sender’s email address to your Address Book. By default, addresses in the Address Book are not considered Junk Mail.

Opera M2

When Spam Blocking is enabled in Opera M2, all Spam messages are automatically sent to the Spam folder.

To tell Opera M2 not to send mailVU mail to the Spam folder in the future, highlight the mailVU message found in the Spam folder, and click the Not spam button in the Toolbar. You can also right-mouse-click the mailVU message and choose Mark > Mark as not spam from the pop-up menu.

Eudora

Eudora calls Spam “Junk.” When Junk filtering, called “SpamWatch,” is enabled, all Junk is automatically sent to the Junk folder.

If you find that you have mail which you do not want to be junked there is a way to train Eudora. Simply highlight unwanted Junk in the Junk mailbox, go to the message menu, select “Not Junk”. With time, Eudora learns which messages are not junk and does not place these messages in the Junk mailbox.

mailVU video email app

Try mailVU’s video email service on the web, or via our free video email iPhone app or free video email Android app. If you operate a business, try our Business Plan which has an extensive list of features including the ability to place your branding on video mails, and upload and distribute pre-recorded videos.

Embrace March Madness With mailVU

I’ll admit it. I’m not a big sports fan. Ironic I know since I’ve been married to a sports TV producer for almost six years. Sadly, despite his best efforts, I haven’t retained much of anything. I’m too much of a girly-girl and there is simply no room in my already dangerously cluttered mind for remembering all the rules, regs, players and teams involved in major league and college-level sports.

As far as March Madness goes, I do know a tiny bit about that one. It starts off with 68 college basketball teams and eventually dwindles to the Sweet 16, then the Final Four, then two fight to the death – ok, there’s no fighting to the death, but one team emerges victorious, everyone intact. I also know that each year, companies must brace themselves for the surge in goofing off that happens as workers plot and scheme to catch the games played during the workday.

What could be a more perfect time to use video email to go back and forth with your fellow fans? Imagine if you will…

  • Being able to talk trash about rival schools – Don’t just send text messages, take it to the next level. You’re a Duke fan, your friend’s a University of North Carolina (UNC) fan; let them feel the full effect of your taunts in video! A video email recording will convey the full breadth and depth of your trash-talking, especially if you wear your school’s paraphernalia in the video!
  • Telling your friends about your super awesome, definitely-a-lock-to-win bracket – You’ve done tons of research, preparing for the outcome of these games with the skill and cunning of Sun Tzu (he wrote The Art of War. Not to be confused with the Wesley Snipes movie.) Use video via email to share your strategy and the philosophy behind it with the world.
  • Are you going to any of the games? If you’ve successfully managed to get time off to attend, be sure to use mailVU for iPhone or mailVU for Android to share highlights with the poor souls who weren’t so fortunate. Both are free downloads, so you can record videos wherever you are.
  • Once your team wins, make sure that you let everyone know it in a video mail. Since you’ll have acquired bragging rights for weeks, make videos to rub it in really well. You can even get short URL links for your Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn updates. How cool is that?

Once the games have ended and you’re (hopefully) still employed, check out our Business Plan. It’s full of features designed to help you catch up with those clients you’ll have neglected in the weeks leading to the finals.

Whether you’re rooting for the Delta Devils or the Blue Devils or any team in between, our video mail service is the way to communicate with anyone, anywhere this March Madness season! (I have to thank my husband for that one; who knew that not only could devils be blue, but that they can also live in Mississippi?!)

Questions? Practice your video mailing technique by contacting us here.

Great Video Messages Come From Great Prep II

A few weeks ago, we held a little quick quiz in this space on the best ways to set up and execute your video messages. Here’s another to help guide you in your quest to create the best video emails ever!

True or False: It’s OK to use the computer monitor as your only source of light in a dark room.

This was an easy one; of course the answer is a big fat false! Try it for yourself and you’ll see that it’s not a great idea to simply use your monitor as your source of light. Turn on an overhead light or desk lamp before you use our video email service.

True or False: It’s best to sit as close as possible to the webcam.

False again! If you sit too close to the webcam, your head will appear disproportionately large. No one wants to look like a Kanamit in their videos and oh, what the heck, here’s the Twilight Zone episode I’m talking about in case there are some who don’t know what a Kanamit is!

True or False: We discuss using a desk lamp in question 2, but if the light is too harsh is it OK to leave it and hope for the best?

Third time’s a false too! If the lamp is creating too many harsh shadows or the light is too much for your video, try diffusing it by taping a piece of paper over the front of the lamp. Don’t forget to remove it when your video message is done – we don’t want anyone to start a fire.

These are just a few more simple tips for you to use when sending videos via email. As we’ve said, video production doesn’t have to take a lot of time and resources. If you haven’t already, check out part one of this series.

Keep in mind that lighting can make a big difference in any video recording, even when recording video email from iPhone or video email from Android. Most smartphones have a higher resolution camera in back of the device, so use it whenever you can. Another good tip for your mobile video email is holding your phone in horizontal mode instead of vertical. The image presentation is much nicer.

For our business-minded readers, once you’ve decided on a message and you’ve worked out the logistics for recording your video, be sure to check out mailVU’s Business Plan so you can include your company logo in your messages, track who’s viewed it, create videos to embed on your website or blog and even include custom footers with links back to your site. Log into your Business Plan from mailVU’s Android app and associate your branded template to all your mobile video mails too!

Have you discovered any other helpful video messaging tips or hints you’d like to share? Let us know at info@mailVU.com.
